The person appointed to this post will work within the hospital ophthalmology service; working as part of multi-disciplinary team delivering a coordinated approach to ophthalmic patient care.

The children’s ophthalmology service provides specialised clinics to children with additional needs, and the impact of poor sight on their quality of life makes their eye care specialised and of significant importance. The primary aim of the ophthalmology department is to promote good ophthalmic health and quality of life for all categories of patients who attend the eye clinic. The senior orthoptist therefore has a vital role to play in providing a comprehensive and high quality eye care service to all children and Adults who attend this tertiary level 4 unit, of whom a large cohort have additional needs, for example developmental delay, or children requiring surgical assessments.

The successful candidate will also participate in providing two sessions per week to patients with conditions which result in double vision e.g. neuro-ophthalmology, myogenic and mechanical conditions.  The senior orthoptist will additionally provide visual fields (Humphrey and Goldman) to the ophthalmology department and other hospital specialities (e.g. endocrinology, geriatrics and neurology consultants).  The senior orthoptist will support and supervise the work undertaken by the ophthalmic technical team who undertake visual fields and ophthalmic imaging.  The senior orthoptist will have a close working relationship with their orthoptic colleagues based in community.  The senior orthoptist is responsible for the line manager of basic grade orthoptists.  The department also provides clinical placement education to orthoptic students

Salary: € 54,677, 55,843, 57,045, 58,237, 59,429, 60,683, 62,005, 63,324, 64,380

Hours: 37 hours per week
