| Job Description | Position: Orthoptist – Full-Time Maternity Cover (Until Late 2026) Potential to Transition into a Permanent Role Location: Newtown, NSW 2042 About the Role We are seeking a passionate Orthoptist to join our well-established ophthalmic team in Newtown. You’ll be covering a full-time maternity leave position starting as soon as possible through to late 2026, with the potential to transition into a permanent role following the contract period. This role offers hands-on clinical work, multidisciplinary collaboration, and significant opportunities for professional growth in a supportive and engaging environment. About Our Practice Join a dedicated and skilled team that includes: 👁️🗨️ 8 Ophthalmologists, specialising in: · Cataract & Refractive Surgery · Medical & Surgical Retina · Corneal Disorders · Glaucoma · Oculoplastics 👓 7 Orthoptists, who work collaboratively across subspecialty clinics, diagnostics, surgical planning, and patient education. We are a patient-centred practice that values excellence, teamwork, and continuous learning. You’ll have opportunities to grow your skills across a diverse range of ophthalmic subspecialties in a professional and dynamic setting. Key Responsibilities Clinical & Diagnostic Duties: · Conduct comprehensive orthoptic assessments and manage a range of ocular conditions. · Perform a variety of diagnostic tests and measurements, including: o Patient history o Visual acuity o Refraction o Visual fields o OCT o A-scans o Pachymetry o Topography o Fundus photography o Fluorescein angiography o Anterior segment imaging o IPL Pre-operative Care: · Cataract work-ups, including patient counselling on intraocular lens options · Refractive surgery counselling (PRK, LASIK, SMILE) · Discussion of risks and complications related to surgery or minor procedures · Intraocular lens calculations Post-operative Care: · Run independent post-operative review clinics Collaboration & Communication: · Work closely with ophthalmologists to ensure high-quality, timely, patient-centred care · Accurately interpret and communicate diagnostic findings · Refer abnormal results promptly to clinicians · Maintain thorough, confidential, and up-to-date patient records Requirements · Bachelor’s degree in Orthoptics (or equivalent) · Registration (or eligibility for registration) with the Australian Orthoptic Board preferred, but not essential · Experience in orthoptic assessments, diagnostics, and treatment planning is desirable · Strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team · Commitment to professional development and a willingness to contribute to clinical education or research initiatives Why Join Us? · Be part of a respected, well-supported eye care team with exposure to a broad range of subspecialties · Contribute meaningfully to patient outcomes in a rewarding clinical setting · Access ongoing professional development opportunities, including involvement in education, research, and service improvement · Thrive in a positive, team-focused culture with strong clinical mentorship · Enjoy a competitive salary and the exciting potential to step into a permanent role after the maternity leave period |
